How Not To Lose Money

August 15th, 2008 | No Comments | Filed in Personal Debt

I remember that about a year ago I went to a local casino called Morongo with some family members. I wanted to play some Blackjack because I prefer that to Poker. So we get there and it’s full of people like I figured it would. For that adventure I had $150 dollars to play. I started on the slots and that got boring real fast and I ended up losing money, don’t remember how much though. After that I moved around checking other games and by the end of the night I was out most of my money. Then I decided to play Blackjack with what I had left and guess what, I after about half an hour I had recouped what I’d lost and at one point I was $150 dollars up but then I got greedy and in the end I lost all $150 dollars and owed $20 more to my sister so it was a bad night for me. I don’t go to casinos that often, just once every million years. Moral of the story, next time remember to quit while you are ahead. Just like stocks, I know that when my stocks reach a certain point I will sell, sell, sell because I am in it to make money and not lose money.

Disappointment

I am so disappointed with the last 3 stocks I have bought. So far as I write this post none of them have made me any money. I have lost money and that is not what I expected but hey that is the way it is. What is a guy to do?, I could sell them, take the loss and move on but I am not ready for that just yet.

The thing about this post and the title is that as soon as the market turns around I will forget about the whole thing and feel quite happy with the choices I made, that is if the market turns around any time soon. I am however ready to be disappointed for a while more.

Weekly Investing Report 8/11/08

I am hoping that this week will be a lot better than last when I went back to my losing ways and as a result my account was down $60.26 for the week. I can’t control the stock market but I can control what type of stocks I buy and I seem to be pretty bad at that, hopefully I’ll be proven wrong soon. Enough of that, lets check them numbers.

Scottrade Account (19)

I had one trade last week.

I also transferred $600 dollars into my account.

I bought National Bank of Greece SA (NBG) on 8/7/08. This one is in the Financial sector.

My investments look like this now, 2 JPMorgan (JPM) shares, 3 Bank of America (BAC) shares, 8 Visa (V) shares, 10 Ford (F) shares, 10 Marvel (MVL) shares, 10 International Coal (ICO) shares, 10 Star Bulk Carriers (SBLK) shares and 70 National Bank of Greece (NBG) shares.

I start this week with a total account value of $2,018.45

403-B/DCP

I have been wondering lately if it is at all possible to put three days straight of gains. I honestly don’t think that has happened and if it has I sure wasn’t paying any attention. You have some gains one day and the next day you lose what you gained and then some just to kick you when you are down. Anyway, now lets check those numbers and see if I came out ahead.

National Bank of Greece (NBG)

Not long ago when I transferred $200 dollars into my Scottrade account I said, and I am quoting, “that is going to be the last transfer for a while.” Well, that sure wasn’t it because I transferred $600 more on Wednesday and that leaves me with about $1100 dollars in my savings account. To be honest I was checking Yahoo Finance on Tuesday and I found a stock that caught my attention and that is why I made that transfer. The company in question is the National Bank of Greece SA (NBG), yes I know another Financial and the title of the post as well. Not too long ago I was complaining about how Financials were killing me, remember that post. Wednesday morning I placed the order but it never reached the price I set to trigger it so I still have $717.16 available. The price per share as I write this is $9.98 and just right for me. I am going to try again today and see what happens but if I don’t get it that is ok also.
